Sustaining Humanity
Sustaining Humanity
Cultural expressions like art, music, language, food and style offer platforms to advance understanding and exchange important ideas. UC Davis, which has well-known academic programs across the spectrum of arts and cultural studies, extends its expertise beyond the classroom in a way that positively impacts lives beyond the university’s walls. These programs also directly address questions of sustainability through such means as reinvigorating Native American languages, integrating sustainable materials and practices into all facets of design, and using art to foster a greater understanding of the natural world.
UC Davis programs locally and internationally help to strengthen communities and address their most pressing issues. The Center for Regional Change brings together faculty across campus and regional stakeholders for solutions-oriented research on sustainable community development, including such aspects as affordable housing, youth development and environmental health.
Through scholarship at UC Davis, we are also more deeply understanding humanity itself, through religious and cultural studies, or even recognizing the neurological links of music to memory and emotion.
Founded in agricultural study, UC Davis recognizes and celebrates the role of food in society. The Robert Mondavi Institute advances the quality of life through wine, brewing and food sciences, promoting an understanding of food not just as sustenance, but as a human essence to be celebrated and elevated.
