Saving Lives with Milk

More than 2 million children around the world die annually from diarrheal diseases. UC Davis is working to save many of those lives. In collaboration with researchers in Brazil, UC Davis animal scientists are developing a herd of genetically modified dairy goats, whose milk will carry increased levels of the human enzyme lysozyme, which is expected to protect children against these life-threatening diseases. The team plans to have a milk-producing herd of these goats established in Brazil by 2011 and hopes to begin human trials with the genetically enhanced goats’ milk within five years.
